Site Preparation — Why It Matters and How We Handle It

Before concrete goes in the ground, the ground has to be ready. This is the step that separates slabs that last from slabs that cause problems.

Proper site preparation includes:

  • Land Clearing If the area hasn’t been cleared, vegetation, tree roots, and surface debris need to be removed before grading begins. We coordinate the clearing phase so you’re not tracking down a separate crew.
  • Grading and Leveling The sub-base needs to be properly graded — typically with a slight slope to manage drainage — and compacted to provide a stable, consistent foundation for the concrete. Poor compaction is one of the leading causes of cracking and settling in concrete slabs.
  • Sub-Base Material Depending on the soil type and the slab application, a layer of compacted gravel or crushed rock is placed over the native soil to improve drainage and provide a more uniform base.
  • Form Setting Forms define the perimeter and elevation of the slab. Setting forms accurately is critical for getting the right dimensions, the right thickness, and a properly sloped surface.
  • Reinforcement Depending on the project, slabs include rebar, wire mesh, or fiber reinforcement to add tensile strength and reduce the likelihood of cracking under load or thermal movement.

The Pouring Process

Once the site is prepped and forms are set, the pour itself requires timing and coordination. Concrete needs to be placed, spread, and finished before it sets — which means the crew, the mix, and the logistics need to be ready.

We work with reliable concrete suppliers to ensure the right mix is delivered on schedule. During the pour, we:

  • Place and spread concrete to fill forms evenly
  • Consolidate the mix to remove air pockets
  • Screed the surface to the correct elevation
  • Float and trowel the surface to the specified finish
  • Apply curing compounds or curing methods as appropriate for conditions
  • Cut control joints where needed to manage where cracking occurs rather than letting it happen randomly

The finish on the slab depends on the intended use. Equipment storage and agricultural slabs typically get a broom finish for traction. Shop floors and residential slabs may get a smoother trowel finish. We’ll discuss what’s right for your application during the quoting process.

Concrete quotes are typically fast. If you have a clear idea of the size, location, and use of the slab, we can often give you a number quickly — sometimes on the spot during a site visit.
Jobs that require engineering specifications take a bit more time. Engineered slabs — such as those required for commercial structures, certain agricultural applications, or buildings subject to code review — involve specifications from a structural engineer that dictate reinforcement, thickness, mix design, and sub-base requirements. Those specs need to be factored into the quote accurately.
